Three Things to Appreciate about Flamenco:
Flamenco is one of the only art forms in the world in which musical structure is led BY the dancer (or singer if there is no dancer) AS the piece progresses. It is as if the artists all choose a destination, but the stops along the way are determined as they group travels. Traditionally, flamenco is improvised and that is why you won’t see it performed to recorded music.
Flamenco is incredibly complex as a singing, dance and musical technique. If you have ever seen a performance or listened to it, it probably was really hard to clap along to unless you are In the Know about asymmetrical rhythmic structures. We count flamenco in a 2/4 or a 12 count. Some styles are even counted in 5. It gets really fun when you realize that often the dancer, singer and guitarist are all interpreting the counts in different ways...but always to the same heartbeat...the compas that is at the core of the piece.
Flamenco is a practice more than an art that one can master. We are only disciples of this art. Once you begin studying you realize in a very zen way (hopefully) that there is so much to learn and it is going to be a lifelong practice.
